4th Grade Skyscrapers

The assignment:   An architect from New York contacted our 4th grade classes to help him design a structurally sound skyscraper with a new “paper like” material he created. He wanted the skyscraper to be as tall as possible. They were given two sheets of newspaper and 18 in masking tape. They had two trials and made adjustments in between. The building had to be able to be moved and support itself without leaning. That’s it! It’s called a STEM (science technology engineering math) challenge.
